Three Weeks at the Intensive Care Unit
When the villagers heard thesirens of an ambulance in a village in southern Turkey in a spring morning of 2017, they started to wonder who it was as it was probably for a neighbor or an acquaintance from the village. The village square was crowded with those who had rushed to fiure out what was happening.
Soon, the sad news spread around. Fatma had fallen on the ground while she was working in the garden. For that was all that the villagers heard, they were still wondering the truth. That’s why her daughter Sultan’s cell phone kept ringing all the time while she was waiting at the door of the intensive care unit of the hospital.
The doctors diagnosed a coronary failure and it was fortunate that she was brought to hospital soon after her collapse as it took less than 5 minutes for her husband to fid her lying still on the flor and call the emergency. Due to the seriosity of the heart problem, Fatma was soon connected to a life support unit. Meanwhile, all the family members, relations and villagers were saying prayers for a miraculous recovery. After everything had been done, the doctors told the family members that it was impossible for her to recover and there was not even a slightest chance of survival.
They asked the family members to make the decision on disconnecting her from the life support unit, which meant the decision on her death. The family members gathered together and couldn’t agree. They decided to wait for some more time. A couple of days later, nothing had changed. The doctors asked for the decision once more. This time, they let them unplug the life support unit in tears. Just as one of the doctors unplugged the unit, Fatma moved her eyelids. The doctors couldn’t believe their eyes. From that moment on, the health staf and the family worked day and night patiently and in cooperation for Fatma’s recovery. In the end, they won. Fatma is healthy and back home in her village, now…

Yoğun Bakım Ünitesinde Üç Hafta
Köylüler, 2017 yılının bahar sabahı Türkiye’nin güneyindeki bir köyde bir ambulansın üçünü duyduğunda, muhtemelen bir komşu veya köyden bir tanıdık için kim olduğunu merak etmeye başladılar. Köy meydanı, olup biteni bulmak için acele edenler ile doluydu.
Yakında üzücü haberler yayıldı. Fatma bahçede çalışırken yere düşmüştü. Çünkü köylüler duydukları buydu, hala gerçeği merak ediyorlardı. Bu yüzden kızı Sultan’ın cep telefonu, hastanenin yoğun bakım ünitesinin kapısını beklerken sürekli çalmaya devam etti.
Doktorlar koroner yetmezlik teşhisi koydular ve kocasının hala flor üzerinde yatarak acil duruma çağırması 5 dakikadan az sürdüğü için, çöktükten hemen sonra hastaneye kaldırıldığı için şanslıydı. Kalp sorununun ciddiyeti nedeniyle Fatma yakında bir yaşam destek birimine bağlandı. Bu arada, tüm aile üyeleri, ilişkiler ve köylüler mucizevi bir iyileşme için dua ediyorlardı. Her şey yapıldıktan sonra, doktorlar aile üyelerine iyileşmesinin imkansız olduğunu ve en ufak bir hayatta kalma şansı bile olmadığını söyledi. Aile üyelerinden, yaşam desteği birimiyle bağlantısını kesme kararı almasını istediler, bu da onun ölümüne ilişkin karar anlamına geliyordu. Aile üyeleri bir araya geldi ve kabul edemediler. Biraz daha beklemeye karar verdiler. Birkaç gün sonra hiçbir şey değişmedi. Doktorlar bir kez daha karar istedi. Bu kez, yaşam destek birimini gözyaşları içinde bırakmalarına izin verdiler.
